The Barbican is an element of Kraków's fortifications. It was built in the years 1498-1499 when Jan Olbracht was the king. It is an example of a perfectly preserved defensive structure from the Gothic period, it has three floors and seven turrets used to fire at enemies. The thoughtful arrangement of turrets and arrowslits made it possible to very effectively repel the invasions of foreign troops. The building was surrounded by a deep moat, which provided additional protection, it was possible to get to its interior by means of a permanent connection with the Florian Gate (the so-called neck) or through the gate with a drawbridge from the side of Kleparz.
