The Old Synagogue initially adjoined the city's defensive walls and was probably built in the second half of the 15th century. After a fire in 1557, a decision was made to rebuild the damaged synagogue and the execution of this task was entrusted to a Florentine architect. In keeping with the spirit of the times, the synagogue was given a Renaissance character, recreating many of the previous elements, preserving, for example, a rib vault. Tadeusz Kościuszko gave his speech in the synagogue, calling for the fight for freedom. Currently, the synagogue houses one of the branches of the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow, presenting the History and Culture of Jews.
