The Munttoren, also known as the Mint Tower, is a historic structure in the heart of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, situated on the bustling Muntplein square, at the intersection of major commercial thoroughfares such as Kalverstraat and Rokin. The tower, rising to a height of approximately 40 meters, is a remnant of the city's medieval defensive walls, which were expanded from the 14th century. It owes its current shape to the reconstruction from 1620, after the original structure was destroyed by fire. A characteristic feature of Munttoren is the baroque dome designed by Hendrick de Keyser, one of the most significant architects of the Dutch Golden Age, who gave the tower its current form. The clock in the tower, with four dials pointing to the four cardinal directions, allowed the inhabitants of Amsterdam to orient themselves during the day.
